I used to write and speak extensively around themes of substance related to my work. At the time, primarily economic competitiveness in emerging markets. I may dig up some of the older articles I have written to include here, but for now, the two biggest writing milestones are below - Plowing the Sea and Culture Matters.

Plowing the Sea was a book written with my friend and partner, Michael Fairbanks. It was at the time, I believe, a very important book. It was the first book published by HBS Press on economic development, and it was the first book we were aware of that addressed the issue of business' role in creating wealth and prosperity in poorer countries. Most economic development efforts up to the time were focused on macroeconomic and political policy reform. We went "micro" and challenged the conventional wisdom at the time about how you create wealth that benefits the majority, not just the elite.

It fit somewhere in between microfinance and structural reforms. And I think it resonated well. The book has had some legs - it is still required reading at many business schools, still is in print, and I still get comments from readers who are just discovering it thanking us for writing it.

Culture Matters was a book resulting from a conference conceived of by Michael Fairbanks and Lawrence Harrison that I was involved with. It is a book asking hard questions by a number of leading scholars and practitioners about the role of culture in economic development. A wide variety of views are expressed, and it is a fascinating compendium of thought on the topic.

Plowing the Sea: Nurturing the Hidden Sources of Growth in the Developing World, Michael Fairbanks and Stace Lindsay, Harvard Business School Press, 1997.

Culture, Mental Models, and National Prosperity in Culture Matters: How Values Shape Human Progress, Basic Books, 2000.

In the past few years, I have been spending more time writing fiction. I have written a screenplay and a novel - both very much in draft form, but hope to refine and perhaps post relevant sections here as time goes on.
