We hold these truths...

"History tells as that while these truths are self-evident, they are not self-executing."
- President Obama's 2013 innauguration speech

Reminds me of the powerful reading we do in our Aspen Seminars from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Letter From Birmingham City Jail:

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everyehwere. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garmet of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affets all indirectly.

As true today as it was when he wrote it. Especially if we cast our gaze around the world.

I wonder which self-evident truths are being denied in our corner of the world, and how we might feel more deeply that network of mutuality he suggests ties as all together. Or have we so innoculated ourselves from what is happening in the lives of those around us that we can no longer see it?
